My son had ADHD, so I was used to the daily calls about the trouble he caused at school.

So one day a teacher calls and I say, “What did he do wrong?”

Teacher: “Oh it’s nothing like that.”

Me: “Really?!” This teacher has my complete and undivided attention now.

But before I go on, I need to give the audience the scene from a day or two before this call.

I was a single parent Marine (translation - tired all the time).

My son and I are at the seven-day store for some milk and he is acting oddly (which means he was actually standing still in line instead of literally bouncing).

My son says: “Dad, I really like this comic.”

Me: “Uh-huh”

Son: “No, Dad, I really like this comic.”

Me: “Ya, okay._

Son: “NO DAD! I really, really like this comic!”

Then it dawns on me: Comics have words!

(I had been trying to get him to learn the alphabet, but if you know ADHD kids, they can really be stubborn about not doing some things).

Me: “I tell you what I will do. You tell me one letter in the title of that comic and I will buy it for you right now and take it home and read it to you.”

Imagine a kid with a look of intense concentration — like trying to solve Einstein’s Relativity equations. Meanwhile, I am quietly ushering people ahead of me while we stand in line.

So he finally gets the letter and I fulfill my end of the bargain.

Now we can go back to the phone call with the teacher.

Teacher: “It’s just that we were learning the alphabet today and we were saying A is for apple and B is for ball, but when we got to I we were saying I is for ice cream and igloo, but your son said, ‘I for Iron Man ONLY!’ “

Me (responding rather sheepishly): “Ah yes, Comics were all I could get him to read to learn his alphabet.”

So “odd” for me was that he wasn’t in trouble, and a teacher actually called to compliment one of my hare-brained (really just desperate) ideas to make sure my son did not grow up illiterate - Ha!
